Spiced Cherry Red Is the Juiciest New Hair-Color Trend for Fall 2022

The Color: High-intensity auburn

The Look: Irish genetics, Miranda Hobbes, Joan Holloway-Harris

The Method: Hazelton believes red hair can be worn by anybody (kind of like a Kiss Me I’m Irish T-shirt on St. Patrick’s Day). But appreciating your skin’s undertones helps narrow down the options: Warm faces and brighter, orangier color (SZA, Scooby Doo’s Daphne), cool faces and cool, blue-leaning auburn (Christina Hendricks, Florence Welch, this shoot’s red-hair chameleon Lindsey Wixson). This particular crimson shade was inspired by Hazelton’s work on the HBO show The Time Traveler’s Wife, where she had to create a wardrobe of reds that would glow in natural lighting. Even after a long night of toiling in the dungeons of her home salon, each wig for the series was not finished until it could be appraised in the next morning’s sunlight.

The Color: A classic ginger brew

The Look: Julianne Moore (usually), Asuka Langley, Libby’s canned pumpkin

The Method: For this story, Hazelton — with a cohort of colorist colleagues — bleached, stained, and painted five wigs into a spectrum of five gorgeous reds (all to be modeled on the naturally dark blonde Lindsey Wixson). The logical middle of that spectrum is this one: a spicy shade of not-quite-brunette.
