Braided High Bun

For the first hairstyle, I’m going to begin by brushing all of my hair together at the crown of my head. 

Using a hair band, I’m going to tie it all together into a ponytail. 

Now I’m going to divide the ponytail into two equal sections and work with each section individually. 

Starting with the right section, I’m going to take this hair and create a c shaped loop, tucking the hair back around the hair band. 

So I’m pulling the hair band out at the back of my head and I’m wrapping the section around the hair band so it’s creating a loop at the back of my head, with the ends sticking out the right side of the bun. 

Now I’m going to repeat the same process with the other section of hair. 

So I’m taking the section of hair, and I’m going to pull out a section of the hair band at the front of the bun and I’m going to create a c shaped loop with the section of hair.

I’m going to tuck the section around the hair band so it creates a loop and the ends are sticking out the left side of the bun. 

Now I’m going to braid the two end sections that are sticking out on each side of the bun. 

So starting with the section on the right side of my head. I’m going to divide the section into three equal pieces and I’m crossing the side strands under the middle strand, alternating between the right and left side sections. 

Once the braid reaches the ends, I’m going to slide a bobby pin over the bottom of the braid so it doesn’t unravel. 

Now I’m going to go back over the braid and gently pull out the sides of the braid so it loosens out of the bobby pin and the braid becomes wider and more full. 

Now I’m going to braid the ends on the left side of the bun. 

So I’m dividing the section into three smaller pieces. I’m crossing the side strands under the middle strand, alternating between the left and right side strands and i’m going to repeat this pattern working my way down to the ends of the hair. 

Once the braid reaches the bottom, I’m going to slide a bobby pin over the end of the braid. 

Then I can go back over it and gently pull on the sides, to widen the braid and make it look fuller than it is. 

Now i”m going to wrap and pin both of the braids to finish off the bun. 

So I’m taking the braid from the right side of my head, and i’m going to wrap it around the front of the bun. Since there’s a bobby pin over the end of the braid, I’m simply going to slide it into the hair, towards the center of the bun. 

Then I’m going to take the braid from the left side of my head and wrap this one around the back of the braid, doing the same technique as before, sliding the bobby pin in towards the center of the bun. 

Once the braids are pinned, I’m going to go back over the style and pull out any sections of the bun that need to be pulled out to help hide the hair band underneath. I’m also going to add in some more bobby pins wherever the braids or bun feel a little bit loose. This will also help close off any gaps anywhere in the bun as well. 

90’s Curly Bun

For the next bun, this is a style I saw trending on social media. It ha a 90’s vibe and to recreate this style, I’m going to begin by brushing all of my hair up into a high ponytail again. 

Then using a hair band, I’m going to tie off the hair at the crown of my head. 

Now I’m going to divide off small sections of hair from the ponytail and wrap these into the small curled sections of the bun. 

So I’m taking a 1/2″ section of hair from the ponytail and I’m going to wrap this hair around my left pointer finger. 

Then I’m going to lay the section against the top of my head. 

Now using bobby pins I’m going to grip a bit of hair on one side of the loop and pin it horizontally along the section. 

I’m going to pin both the left side and the right side to ensure it stays pinned in place. 

Now I’m going to divide off another section of hair and wrap this around my left pointer finger again. 

I’m wrapping the sections forwards, towards my face and I”m wrapping the entire section down to the ends so they’re inside the loop. 

The I’m laying the section against my head, in front of my hair band and I’m going to pin both the left and right sides of the loop. 

I’m going to repeat this pattern, rolling small sections of hair until all of the hair is rolled and pinned at the top of my head. 

I worked in a clock-wise pattern around the hair band. Laying the first sections against my head and then piling a second section on top of that row.

I also divided off different sized sections anywhere between 1/4″ and 1/2″ in thickness. I didn’t want sections that were too big, or sections that were too small. I went completely by feel and tried to keep them all about the same size. 

Once I worked my way across the front of the bun and down the right side. I wrapped up sections to pin at the back of the hair band. 

As you’re wrapping and pinning it’s a good idea to look at the style from all angles to make sure the bun is staying in one spot, one area at the top of the head. 

It’s easy to add too much hair to one side and have the bun ending up being lopsided. 

Once I wrapped and pinned sections around the entire base of the bun, then I used the last few sections to build the bun out a little bit and add some height. It’s easy to wrap and pin each section as you go to ensure the end result will look the way you like. 

This style takes a little bit of extra time to create but I think it’s really cute and something I wore all the time for formal events when I was younger and still in school so I’m glad it’s trending again.

Wrapped High Bun

For the third hairstyle, I’m going to begin this look by brushing all of my hair into a high ponytail again. 

I’m going to place all of my hair at the crown of my head and then wrap it with a hair band. 

On the last wrap of the hair band, I’m going to pull the hair part way through to create a loop in the hair, so the ends are pointing forwards towards the top of my head and my face. 

Now I’m going to take these ends and braid them into a regular three strand braid. 

So I’m splitting the section into three smaller pieces and I’m going to cross the side strands over the middle strand, alternating between the left and right side strands. 

Now I”m going to take the braid and wrap it around the right side of the bun. 

I need the braid to be fuller and more disheveled, so I’m going to gently pull on the edges to loosen small sections from the braid. This is what will help it look wider and more full. 

Then I’m going to continue wrapping the end of the braid around the base of the bun and pin it over the top of the hair band. The end of my braid reached around the front, at the base of the braid, so I went ahead and pinned it underneath the braid so it was covering the hair band. 

Now I’m going to go back over the looped section of the bun on the left side and gently pull on small sections in opposite directions, working my way up from bottom to top. This will add texture to this looped section, making it look a little more casual and also help widen it a little bit. 

Then once that’s done, I’m going to go back over the whole style and pinch at pull on the hair around the top of my head, at the front and add some volume here. I’m also going to pin down the braid anywhere there is a gap or hold and make sure the style feels nice and pinned. Then I can set everything w hairspray and smooth down any flyaway pieces.
